During Advisory students took part in a special “marketplace” activity where students bartered and traded their handmade craft items with classmates and teachers. During 6th grade World Studies, students have discovered that trading and bartering is not only an important economic feature, but also an important social activity in many cultures. Students have been busy making items for trading. Teachers enjoyed taking part in a “duka” filled with happy students, tough bargainers and proud creators.

Students attended and particpated in the Hunger Banquet, an event that the students did not know much about (hopefully). The Hunger Banquet was held in the 5/6 Assembly Room.
Here's how it worked:
Students chose a popsicle stick as they came through the door. This was a "blind placement" into one of three groups: Red, Green, or Yellow.
Red Group: elegant table with linens, crystal goblets, fine china, silver service.
Red group dined on sliced strawberries and whipped cream, homemade pancakes, chocolate chip waffles, mini-quiches, chocolate milk, orange juice, water. Afternoon group dined on chocolate cake, fancy cookies, Cokes, Dr. Peppers, M&M candies in crystal dish, etc. Way too much food, many choices, unlimited amount.
Green Group: bare tables, metal folding chairs, paper plates. Spam on a plate, refried beans on a plate, loaf of white bread, "goats milk" (aka soy milk)Just enough food, but few ate it.
Yellow Group: sat on the "ground" (burlap), communal rice bowl, communal water well, no plates, rice, water. Little interest in the food & disappointment about being in yellow group.
Objective was to experience, through simulation and role play, what it would be like to eat like the world eats. Important questions posed to students: If there is enough food produced in the world to feed every person,(and there is), then why is there such hunger?
Interesting insights and comments from students made us realize that all the effort put forth by our adult volunteers and teachers was, in fact, worth it. Students read quotations, commented on PPT slides giving information on world hunger, and in some periods students read poems from their Hunger Journals. Thank you to all our volunteers: Nancy Champion, Kristen Fuller, Jennifer Hickey, Jennifer Hammond, Laura Scott, Diana Klein, Jennifer Tipton, Neeraja Kikkeri, Dottie Hyde, Jacque Green, Renee Pacewicz, Jeannine Bidwell, Elaine Vitt, Jenni Scoggins, Dona Pierce, Kimberly Martinez, Bernadette Schaeffler, Ruthie Lightbourn, and Amy Jones. You ladies worked tirelessly and it was a LONG commitment, wasn't it? Many thanks, also, to the myriad of parents who brought all the food and beverages for the Banquet. Hunger Banquet 2013 could not have been possible without the support, donations, and help from so many parents.

2012 - 2013 School Year
WELCOME BACK!!
This year in Social Studies, we'll begin the year with a quick review of geography & map skills. We will learn about the world through the four lenses of physical geography, economics, government, and culture. We will read If the World Were a Village by David J. Smith, a thought-provoking book that compares the world's population to a village of 100 residents. After becoming proficient cartographers, we'll take off on our world wide adventure. Visitors and guests are always welcome, as there is nothing better than learning about an area from those who know it best. Australia, New Zealand, Oceania & Antarctica will be the first places on our journey. We'll also include current events and places in the news. Bring your curious minds and your smiles.
