Welcome to 6th grade Social Studies and the Earthshaker Team!  In this course you will learn about our world through the four lenses of physical geography, economics, government and culture.  I look forward to a great year!

Tomorrow you will continue working on your photoscope on Africa. Due tomorrow - Guided Reading 17-2.  I have changed the test over Chapter 17, sections 1 and 2 to Thursday, May 9th. You will need to know the location of the southern countries of Africa that are shown on the map on page 455 of your textbook. Trade Day Items due May 9th.  Trade Day is Friday, April 10th during advisory. Practice map games - www.yourchildlearns.com or www.sheppardsoftware.com . Folktale skits on Friday.

Your folktale skits yesterday were awesome!  The other groups will perform on Friday.  Don't forget - each member needs a costume, prop, know their lines, know the dance. Africa Trade Days will take place during advisory on Friday, May 10th.  You need to have your items in class to show me on Thursday, May 9th.

Due tomorrow - Guided Reading 17-1 and text book page 457 on South Africa.  There will be a test over Chapter 17 on Tuesday, May 7th.

Be sure to bring music and speakers to practice your folktale skit tomorrow.  Two groups will present on Monday, other groups will present next Friday. Chapter 15 test retakes will be tomorrow and Friday morning at 7:45.  You should be memorizing your lines for your folktale skit as well as looking for props you can use for your skit.  It would be a good idea if you could meet with your group after school between tomorrow and Monday to practice your skit. Tomorrow we will be discussing internally displaced people in Africa.

Tomorrow - each group for the African folktale skit needs to turn in a copy of your script to me.  Be sure to bring your music and speakers to practice your skit.  Tonight - begin thinking of a costume for your character and simple props you can bring from home to use in your skit.  No DG this week :)

Tomorrow you will be working on your folktale skit.  Be sure to bring your music and speakers.  If your folktale is not already written in a skit/play format, your group will need to write it tomorrow.  Your map on colonialism in Africa is due tomorrow.

Zumba dancing tomorrow.  Wear tennis shoes and the appropriate clothes for exercising.  Although Zumba originated in Colombia, there are some steps which originated from African slaves!  This fun event is a great example of cultural borrowing in our world. Tomorrow - each student is to bring a recorded song to share with their group as a possibility to use in their folktale skit. Regions of Africa Map due tomorrow.

Japan - Due tomorrow - Two typed haikus along with the calligraphy handed out today matted on construction paper.  Remember - for your three line haiku - The first line is 5syllables, the second line 7 syllables and the third line 5 syllables. This should be typed in a font size no smaller than 14.

Next Wednesday, classes will give origami a try! You may bring your own paper and instructions if you wish. I will also have colored copy paper to use. You can purchase origami paper at Michaels, World Market and I'm sure Learning Express.

Happy New Year!  Today we began our unit on China.  Your China atlas quiz is due tomorrow.  Tomorrow we will be going to the computer lab to work on the activity discussed in class today. The Landmark Book for periods 1,2, and 3.  The dodecahedron for fifth period.

After some further research on henna painting, I've decided that it would be a good idea for students to try this at home under parent supervision.  I'm sorry for the trouble some parents went to to locate the kits, but this might be a fun activity for you and your child over the holidays! Students need to have the four events that occured before their birthday and the four that occured after their birthday, along with pictures for each by tomorrow.  These should be saved on a thumb drive to be copied to their M drive at school.

India - workbook page 20.  Questions 2-7 on page 148.  On Tuesday we will try Henna painting as they do in India. Kits are available at Michaels and Hobby Lobby, but most likely other stores as well. Students are excited about trying it out. No DG this week!

Read J.S. pages 6 & 7 on Bengal Tiger.  Complete the questions on page 7 of J.S. on the map of India.  By the end of class tomorrow you have saved ten events that happened before your birthday and ten events that happened after your birthday on your M drive and or a flashdrive.  Remember, you also need a photo to go with each event and the year that each occured.  We will do a computer project with this information in the computer lab after the holiday.

Welcome Back!! Today in your advisory class, you received five forms to have your parents sign and return.  Please return all by Thursday.  The five forms included the Earthshaker Information Sheet, Student Work Display Waiver, Earthshaker Team Policies (yellow) the Class Information Sheet, and the Room Mom Form.  Please return all of these by Thursday.

Students also worked on a student shield telling about themselves.  Remember to print off a picture of yourself, glue it in the center box and return to class tomorrow.:)
